Itinerary
Day 1: In the morning, the guide will outline the agenda and provide an introduction to sea kayaking and packing the kayaks. After a scenic water taxi ride to Shoup Glacier Marine State Park, we'll explore the upper bay, spotting sea otters, seals, and seabirds. This marks our first close encounter with a glacier, and the campsite is one of the best in the Sound!
Day 2: We will paddle south out of Shoup Bay through Valdez Narrows into Valdez Arm, heading to Sawmill Bay Marine State Park, surrounded by rainforest and peaks. We'll enjoy a dramatic coastline and set up camp, then paddle into "Bear's Kitchen" to look for black bears feeding on salmon in the evening.
Day 3: After a peaceful night in Sawmill Bay, we’ll paddle along a scenic coastline to a favorite camping beach with a rushing water source and great views across Valdez Arm. This is a perfect spot for a campfire and evening stories, with the option for a rainforest walk if time permits.
Day 4: We will paddle to the Columbia Glacier area in Heather Bay, known for its emerald waters and diverse wildlife. Enjoy breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and towering icebergs throughout the day.
Day 5: Our time in Heather and Columbia Bays will be dedicated to exploring the ice of Columbia Glacier, with opportunities for paddling and hiking. Depending on weather and preferences, we may stay at the same campsite or move toward Glacier Island.
Day 6: Our final day includes an early paddle out of Heather Bay to Glacier Island. Weather permitting, we’ll turn Bull Head for a memorable experience with Stellar Sea Lions and possibly humpback whales. After lunch on a secluded beach, a motorboat will shuttle us back to Valdez.
